17-8-12

17th August, 2012

Mr Carmichael went through some safety guidelines for working in the labs and issues the two course text books. He explained the blogging system and opened up ISA 247 to show the class what was up there.
He also introduced students to the postings of Monbiot and Porrit. The class read the most recent Monbiot posting and analysed its content and reliability.

We then looked at what 'sustainability' meant (meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs) and talked about the importance of considering environmental, economic and social perspectives when approaching an issue. Examples of ISA's impact were used to explore the importance of this balance.

Finally, we began the systems and models unit and learnt that a system was made up of two or more linked parts and how an open (matter and energy exchange), closed (energy only) and isolated (no exchange) differed. We read about the Biosphere II project.

Homework - Read the Gaia article and complete the reflective 'Getting Started' sheet.
